Country Boy in The City, Plot for a Reverse Holiday Movie, Fiction

Still working to deconstruct the Holiday Movie trope. [Gift Guide intro, Cue Cheesy Music]

Woman lives in The City. Fabulous job. Fabulous apartment. Comes from Small Town. Rest of family still lives in Small Town. Doesn’t understand why heroine wants to live in The City,

Son of friend of parents needs to come to The City for significant plot reasons. He, of course, has a cover-model face and admirably fills out his flannel shirt and jeans. He hates The City. Says it’s dirty, crowded, and expensive. Plus his dog has nowhere to run.

Heroine agrees to let him stay in her guest room as favor to her parents because you know how expensive The City is. It was easier than listening to the litany.

He is a jerk to her friends. Rude about living in The City. Intolerant of at least one friend due to gender and/or racial issues. She points out to friends this is why she left Small Town.

Dog comes around first. Turns out he loves the attention of going for daily walks & jogs with hero rather than running around on his own. Loves the urban park and the park dog runs.

Hero enjoys all the gorgeous women he sees while he is walking the dog, because of course the extras are as beautiful as the main characters. For narrative balance, not all the points he makes about The City are wrong. For example, how do you meet these gorgeous women? Heroine admits that she has been as alone in city as she ever was sitting in the middle of a field. Lonely in a crowd is cliche but true.

Significant plot reasons require hero to put on a suit. He says he feels stupid, but checks himself out in the mirror. Does the 007 gun draw, pulling off the hot but playful look.

Hero is a singer in church on Sundays. Sees no point in coming to City for live performances when a top-flight stereo system is as good as being there. Until heroine takes him to see Famous Singer live in flawlessly designed concert space. Is gobsmacked.

Ditto food. Both restaurants to eat at and ingredients available to cook with, because of course he is an outstanding chef. Makes thank you dinner for heroine. They bond.

Somewhere in here, hero learns Valuable Lessons about misjudging people. There is a crisis with his dog. The friend he was rude to is the one who steps up to help. “I don’t like you, but that’s not your dog’s fault.”

Another of the heroine’s friends is a musician in the Wrong Kind of music. Hero scoffs. Then hero learns that friend was classically trained at famous conservatory. Plays several instruments. Sings better than hero does. Hero is, if not humbled, at least taken aback. Starts taking friend’s recommendation for clubs to hear up&coming singers. They have a night out together. They bond.

Gradually hero becomes becomes enchanted with big city values. Intellectual curiosity. Global viewpoints. Relentless energy. Meringue shops that are open late.

He starts to see the upsides of City living. Crowds are not always a bad thing.

“I’m not Betty’s son everywhere I go.”

“I don’t run into my middle school teacher when I’m on a date.”

He finds out that City dwellers will pay stupid money for custom woodwork. Keeps flannel wardrobe as shtick for his burgeoning carpentry business, Country Boy in The City.

Wait. This is supposed to be a holiday movie. Wildly decorated shop windows. Ice-skating in the park. Pop-up holiday market. Holiday foods and traditions from other countries. The City brings the sparkle. Final scene under big illuminated tree.

Kiss and fade out.

Winter Protocols, Rodney Continues To Have Opinions About His Wardrobe

Awareness of the outside world. Blog anniversary. First post Dec 22, 2011. Internet wisdom says that long-form, personal blogging is still dead. I need to be writing scannable content that solves reader-focused problems. Yeah, not gonna happen. I’m bored even thinking about it. [We begin. Again.]

Rodney, after a cold night: I liked the layer under my blanket. Now, I was wondering about the Sleazy. [Winter Protocols, Blanket Adjustment]

While back, we bought a Sleazy to use as a black hood for Milton’s Night Unicorn costume. [Minions]

Reused for Rodney’s Doppler Effect costume. [Neither Sound Nor Light]

Brought out as a possibility for Milton’s Cookie Monster costume. Ended up not using it. While it was out, tried it on Rodney during a cold snap.

He LOVED it.

He was warm. He was pretty sure this is what the cool kids were wearing. We are pretty sure that neither of our horses have any idea what the cool horses are doing. We didn’t tell him.

We will definitely be digging it back out, because the cold is coming.

A 43o drop? Three nights in the teens? Two days not above freezing? That is so not Alabama.

Stay unfrosty, my friends.

I am on record as not feeling the festive season this year. [A Brief Check-In, intro]

Even I can’t avoid Christmas entirely.

Stepping Stone Farm annual barn Christmas party. People in Christmas sweaters. Potluck food. (My chef brought homemade pretzel bites. So good. Battled with self to leave some for others.) Christmas tree. Decorated stalls. Watching the kids play Dirty Santa. Announcements. Horses with bows.

I survived.

What’s In A Name, The Time I Rode In A World Championship, Seriously Would I Lie To You About This? Guest Photos

Photos by Deborah Rubin.

Back in the 80s, I rode in the side-saddle class at Washington. Through a fluke of organizing, the class was able to claim the title of World Champion. The story I heard was that they looked around, saw no one was using the title, grabbed it, and ran. The selection criteria was brutal. Your check had to clear. This was back when we sent checks to horse shows.

Thank you to the National Sporting Library and Museum for digital scans of the pages and covers. My copies went missing after a leak in my office.

Back to the horse show.

George & I entered for giggles. Our turnout was flawless. We looked awesome standing still. As soon as George took a step. Bzzzzzzt! Thank you for playing. We went back to defend our also-ran status the next year.

Down The Rabbit Hole
Institution memory is short. “We are excited to incorporate this new discipline into our program.” WIHS: Ladies’ Side Saddle Hunter returns to WIHS lineup. Not so new. At least the title writer got it right.

“The evening session features the $25,000 International Open Jumpers and the World Champion Ladies Sidesaddle Hunter (undersaddle) class.” Washington Post: SIDESADDLE IS FEATURED THIS WEEK, by Sarah L. Greenhalgh, 1998. Emphasis mine.

Rodney, while being blanketing of an evening: What is this ‘layering’ I hear about? How does that work?

Yes, Rodney now wears layers.

Another variable for blanket math.

What is the temperature?

Sunny or cloudy? Raw, cold days bring out the blanket in me.

Day or night? Short of hot, humid summer nights, if it’s dark, Rodney can at least wear his sweatshirt.

Wet or dry? Our current waterproof blankets are all on the cold end of the spectrum. Warm and rainy, he’s out of luck.

What am I wearing? I joke, but Rodney’s response to weather is fairly close to mine. [I’m Cold, You Need A Blanket]

Reminder, we are talking about an unclipped, healthy, older horse, living in the American South. What can I say, he likes to be toasty.

Quilt Journal, Graphic Sketch

Apparently, a quilt journal is a book in which one records the details of the quilt one is making. I heard the words completely differently. Since an illuminated journal is a journal that is illuminated, a quilt journal is a journal that is quilted, right? I though it was a cool idea. I would so do this if I were a quilter.

It was a great trip … sightseeing, so much sightseeing … saw all the historic buildings .. visited museums … ate street food … saw a movie being made … rode in a cable car up to a castle … listened to music in scenic squares … time spent at the beach and in parks … time spent time looking at the stars … went to a play … had nice meal … shopping, so much shopping … it’s good to be home.

Rabbit Hole. My search did not turn up any online examples, although I’m sure folks have done this. The closest I found was a crochet temperature blanket by @lapplecrochets on instagram.

Update. Story quilts! That was the search term I needed to use. Thank you Jane. (See comment.)
