My first new britches – in contrast to jods – in a decade. My philosophy for schooling is to get as close to show attire as I can afford. Then, I don’t have any rude surprises in the show ring. Since Rodney has no shows on his horizon, I can go for as much comfortContinue reading “New Equipment: Britches & Boots”

Arbitrary Decisions
Massive life-changing decisions? No problem. Which college? I’ll apply to a random handful & pick the one with the best name that is farthest away. Uproot my life and follow this dude? Cool. Expensive, but mid-level and ultimately arbitrary decisions? An eternity of debate. Buying a saddle? Is this brand better than that brand? New?Continue reading “Arbitrary Decisions”
Rodney on a Long Rein
A short-term goal for Rodney is to walk quietly on the buckle. You’d think this would be Horse 101. I’m not talking an animated walk, or keeping his frame without me holding him up. I mean a slow, gentle plod around the ring, and ultimately around the field. As with riding bareback, the goal isContinue reading “Rodney on a Long Rein”

Cross-training
Driving Thursday While I don’t ever see Rodney hooked to a cart, he’s working in driving tack at the moment. I’ve discussed the harness saddle [Meanwhile]. The driving bit is on loan from Coach Kate. The center is constructed so that the bit flexes up, down, and forward, but not back, making it aContinue reading “Cross-training”
New Equipment: Whip
Saddle Seat Wednesday Snowbee dressage whip from Carousel Tack Shoppe. Lost at show (I always bring two). Replaced. Amazed to see how worn the old one had gotten. I’m not beating horses with them, I promise. The whip is used lightly on the horse’s shoulder to indicate the canter depart: tip (the head)Continue reading “New Equipment: Whip”
