The Bench, First Draft, Fiction

Words

Note. I’ve heard that fiction should stand on its own. OTOH, I can’t let this go without explanation. I see the middle as 8 – 12 interrelated mini-stories. This is a start. (Photo)

First park worker: “Hey Judson, where did this bench come from?”

Second park worker: “What do you mean, it’s always been there.”

First: “Nay, this is a style C park. You can tell by the double slide. Those get three benches.

Second: “Who knows, maybe they had an extra they didn’t want to take back to the depot. You don’t expect Central to make sense, do you?

First: Truth. Where do you want go for lunch?

~~~
A homeless man slept on the bench. It was a good night. He’d found a copy of the Sun-Star newspaper. Much better than the Herald. More pages. He’d gotten the good bench as well. It was set back among the trees. If the neighborhood patrol was feeling lazy and didn’t get out of the car, he could usually get thru the night uninterrupted.
~~~

The bench saw a lot of kisses. Some good-bye. Some hello. Some tentative. Some tired. Many from dogs.

~~~
A woman sat on the bench reading a book. Next to her stood a baby carriage. The woman and the occupant of the baby carriage were both wrapped in woolen hats and sweaters and mittens. The baby was covered with a heavy blanket.
Another woman slowed down as she walked past. She looked disapprovingly at the pair. “Seems a bit cold for a baby.”
The seated woman pinned a smile to her face. “She sleeps better in fresh air. The doctor says it’s fine as long as she’s warm.”
The seated woman kept the polite smile pinned to her face until the other woman walked off. ‘Must be new,’ she thought. ‘Most of the neighborhood knows us.’
A jogger went past. “Still napping outdoors?”
A smile, this time legitimate, “Yeah, we think one of us must have some Scandinavian heritage that we didn’t know about.”
~~~

Murray hid behind the bench. You could see through the metal seat. Hiding behind it was a empty gesture. He hoped it was enough of one.

This was a crap time to be at the park. Everyone knew Kelly and her people had the park on Wednesdays after school. You didn’t go to the park on Wednesdays without an invite from Kelly.

A girl walked over. One of the lieutenants.

“Watcha doing here?”

“My mom’s got a Zoom call. She told be to come here.” He held up his phone. “I have to,” he pleaded, “She’ll check.” He huddled closer to the bench. “I’ll be real quiet. I promise.”

Conference. Much looking over at him. He practiced his most harmless look. He hoped Kelly understand about parents and GPS.

The lieutenant returned. “Kelly says you have one hour, you have to stay under the bench, and she gets first choice from your lunch for a week.”

He nodded vigorously in Kelly’s direction and crawled under the bench. His mom would be annoyed at the mud on his clothes, but he’s gotten off light. He’d have to be sure that put good stuff in his lunch next week.

The seventh annual Friends of the Park Festival featured the usual run of vendors and food trucks. The art competition was judged by the curator of the city museum.

~~~
Middle of the night. A bodyless voice: Scout. Report.
The legs of the bench telescope down as the metal of the bench ran together: Scout Zirr here.
Voice: So. Humans. Do we invited them to join us or do we sterilize the planet?
Zirr: It’s complicated.
The Virtual Walk
Dragon Con Hustle: Ascent!
Dates, Official – Monday, August 23, 2021 – Monday, September 13, 2021
Date, Me – Saturday & Sunday, September 18 & 19, 2021*
Place – Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport & pasture
Distance – 3.59 miles
Time – ~1 1/2 hours
Results – None posted
Note. First half of two 5ks in one weekend. [Tunnel, post pending]
3.5 miles not 3.1? Oops.
Finished the walk in the pasture the next day.
“You can even break up the distance and complete it over several days to make it more manageable!” Ascent!
Well, that worked out.
Why two walks in a weekend? Why not? Seemed like an interesting thing to see if I could do. Turns out, a lot of folks offer runs (walks) in September. I’d gotten myself slightly over-committed. Will make a note for next year.
*Walked late because I found out about it late. No proof of completion required. ‘Here’s your medal. Have fun.’
The IRL Walk
What better way to celebrate dragon “flight” than an airport? I crack myself up.
Parking deck ramp
View of runways from the roof
Sidewalk
The fat horseshoe shape in the route map is the roof. The larger arcs are the arrival & departure sidewalks, mostly departure due to better GPS. Given the slightest amount of automotive traffic, I would have gotten off the roof. Not even a mouse. I passed a few cars on the ramp while separated by a waist-high concrete barrier.
I was aware that no one would be expecting pedestrians in this situation & behaved accordingly. Having grown up in Manhattan, one of our few pedestrian cities, this hyper-awareness is the attitude I assume in the rest of the US. Not that NY traffic is any better, but at least they have the concept of pedestrians. And taxis don’t want to hit you because that would slow them down. But I digress. I played it safe.
Beaming with Bemer Blanket
Horsekeeping
Awareness of the outside world. Hunter Barn lesson yesterday. At some point, I am going to stop thinking that I can get anything useful done afterwards. Good lesson. Brain is sludge. Fortunately main part of post was already done.
Horses got to try the hot new thing. Bemer Equine
Yes, please.
When you’re a horse and your pecs are tight.
Milton has been doing fantastically afterwards. Rodney enjoyed, but didn’t have as much to address. Hoping to set up another session soon.
New Lesson Horse, Same Issues
Riding
Awareness of the outside world. AL.com: Ancient Alabama once had mountains taller than Everest, PIllion, Nov. 08, 2021.
Rode a new horse in my Hunter Barn lesson last week. Horse shall henceforth be know as Secundus, for obvious reasons.
Fixed the canter transitions from the previous lesson. [Remnants of Saddle Seat]
I know this because I ended up doing so very many canter transitions in this lesson. Seems I am still using too much hand. Not yanking or pulling, just too much hand signaling.
As a school horse, Secondus is naturally conservative with his energy.
Secondus: (cantering)
Me: (slightly adjusts position or redirects path)
Me: (inadvertently makes too much noise with hand)
Secundus: Okay, I’ll trot.
This is annoying. I haven’t ridden an ASB since the before times. In the intervening period, we have ridden the Virtual Tevis twice. That’s 20 months and 200 certified miles. Plus all the other riding. What’s with the saddle seat echoes?
The entire time I rode saddle seat, I had to deal with hunter/jumper/dressage habits. Such as putting my leg on a horse who was wildly opposed that maneuver. [Lessons, Theory Vs. Reality, “The suit horses can be touchy.”]
Now I’ve got saddle seat clogging up my hunter/jumper. This does not strike me as an efficient way to go about things.
“However, it also had the meaning of ‘favorable’ or ‘lucky.'” Wiki: Secundus
No Stirrup November, In Which I Complicate An Introduction
I should warn you. What started as a happy little intro post went off the rails.
To get everyone excited beforehand, Equisarte asked NSN participants to introduce themselves. Questions in italics. [No Stirrup November Begins]
Welcome Everyone!!! While we are gearing up for our 2nd Annual NO Stirrup November Challenge tell us about yourself! Post a photo of you and your horse! Then tell us-
Photo by Ginni Bush [The Return of Doctor Whooves]
Your name: Katherine
Your horse(s) name(s): & Horse’s breed and age:
Rodney, TB, 22
Milton, OTTB, 13
lesson horses, various
What discipline(s) do you ride? It’s complicated. Jumpers, although I haven’t seriously jumped in a decade. Eventing, although it has been even longer since I’ve gone out on a cross-country course in competition. Dressage, when forced. Hunters, back in the day that’s the only place to jump fences lower than 3’6″. Saddle seat, as a lark, an 8-year lark. Short answer? Walking my pasture puff. … and screaming internally.
If you are new here, what I’m referring to is that I have two very nice horses that I have utterly failed to do anything with. It corrodes my soul. It shouldn’t, but it does. [Not Rising To The Challenge]
What State you’re from: I live in Alabama. I’m from … sigh … it’s complicated. Born in Connecticut. Grew up in NYC. Lived several other places. Part of me never left NY.
A fun fact about yourself or your horse: … uh … not feeling fun after that trot down memory lane of dashed hopes in question one.
What is a short or long term goal you are working towards with your horse? I don’t do goals. Too depressing to watch them whiz by. [This Is Why I Don’t Set Goals]
What do you hope to get out of this challenge? Blog posts. Yes, improvement, but also blog posts. And a ribbon.
When did you start riding? A century ago.
Do you compete or ride for leisure? Both.
Favorite place to ride: Yes.
Your horse’s favorite treat: Rodney, horse cookies. Milton, anything. Saddle seat school horses, peppermints. Hunter Barn school horses, I keep forgetting to bring treats.
If you dress up for Halloween with your horse, what will you be? Rodney is a large bay. Milton is a grey. Someday, we’d like to do a group costume of Moose & Squirrel, Natasha Fatale & Boris Badenov.
Outro
Well, that was a ray of sunshine, wasn’t it? I’m actually happy on a day-to-day level. Questions like this take me back. I don’t have an elevator speech for where I am with horses. Wanna know how I feel? Here is 11 years of column, monthly blog, & daily blog tracing every step from buying Rodney to now. Read that. That’s how I feel.
I’m in a mood, aren’t I? Gonna go find a dandelion patch to sit in.
Dia de los Muertos Festival
Images
Awareness of the outside world. “Dayofthedead.holiday is dedicated to celebrating all things Dia De Muertos … Our goal is to build the world’s most authoritative website for the Day of the Dead … All of the content on the site comes from professional writers based in Mexico that have experienced the holiday first-hand.” DOTD.H: About.
~~~

Day of the Dead can look weird and creepy in photos. In person, you see how much love goes into the displays.

Dia de los muertos #19, hosted by Bare Hands Gallery, downtown Birmingham. Photos taken November 4, 2021.

There were altars, aka memorials, for private figures, local celebrities, public figures, and political figures. There was even a group altar for people who had no one. As you would expect, the altars were a lot easier to take when they celebrated the end of a long and full life.

Without a mandate to cover the event, it felt too intrusive to take photos of the more personal altars. That’s why you got the stage, Covid, and a cat statue.

Down the Rabbit Hole

Metamorphosis. I saw the lead quote from this on a poster at the Festival. Poetic and apropos. Was planning to insert it here. Research. Turns out it is from a 2009 book. So, not traditional. Also, the full piece is unsettling, if intriguing. You have been warned.
