Last month, I was sick for a few days. Nothing special, a local bug. However, it took me upwards of a week to shake off the effects. I wasn’t sick, just a little tired, a little off my game. Which made me wonder about our horses. Do we give them enough time to recover? Let’sContinue reading “Horse Rehab”

Cyber Monday: Brushes, Britches, & Books
Television will be the death of movies! The Internet will be the death of bookstores! Yet bookstores and movie theaters are still full on Saturday nights. I have a nasty Amazon habit, yet I still go brick & mortar to pat the books. Similarly, online ordering will never replace a knowledgeable tack store or feedContinue reading “Cyber Monday: Brushes, Britches, & Books”
Out Of Our Hands
Mathilda has decided to change her lifestyle. We were slow to get the message, so she took action. At the Thursday morning carrot check, Hubby was greeted with an empty pen, the barriers in place [Debriefing], mare & gelding calmly eating grass out in the pasture. He came back to the house, to fish meContinue reading “Out Of Our Hands”
Progress is Relative
Mathilda got an excellent review from the blacksmith. She held all four feet up to be trimmed, although it took two goes at the right hind. This is the foot that bears all her weight. I still had to help steady her for the right front but either she’s stronger or we are getting moreContinue reading “Progress is Relative”
The Pendulum Swings
New booties have left Mathilda with heel rubs. We tried to buffer her heels with Vetrap but that appears to have made them worse. The other booties also rubbed but Vetrap solved the problem. Without booties she doesn’t walk enough to keep her hindend loose. With booties, she gets sores. It’s a bit like havingContinue reading “The Pendulum Swings”
Fashion Forward
Mathilda now has a second pair of booties (above). Sporty, aren’t they? We are prepared if she loses one or gets her feet wet. Preliminary data suggests that these are doing even better than the first pair. When Rodney is up and the barrier is down, Mathilda is now out grazing rather than standing likeContinue reading “Fashion Forward”
The Rest of the Story
The details of our colic episode [Long Night]. Round 1 At evening meds, Rodney is covered with mud and refuses his carrot. One advantage to Hubby being a carrot pusher, we have immediate notification when one of the horses is feeling poorly. Rolling + lack of interest in food = possible colic. So I listenContinue reading “The Rest of the Story”
