Why I Am Not Passionate About Horses Passion implies extraordinary effort. Passion implies fortitude in the face of adversity. I am not passionate. I do what is normal to me. I ride. I keep horses at home. I have been doing this for decades. This is normal to me. I can name every horse IContinue reading “Why I Am Not Passionate About Horses”

The Downs & Ups
Down In the past, our horses never had reactions to shots. This year, both Rodney and Milton objected to their vaccinations. A few days of feeling punk. Heat and swelling at the injection sites. We opted for butt shots since Rodney’s neck was tender from being dekinked [Zap]. Drama Queen Milton felt his agony deeplyContinue reading “The Downs & Ups”
Rodney’s Rehab
Bring out & set up equipment [Zap]. Rodney displays signs of approval fore and aft. Put on patches. Back therapy today, so crank up the number. Leave horse in corner with fan. Set up folding chair in other corner with better reading light. A few minutes later, Rodney wanders over to have his face rubbedContinue reading “Rodney’s Rehab”
Milton for the Moment
We are having the vet out to check one of Milton’s feet. There may or may not be anything wrong. If there is, it may or may not have anything to with my mind-numbing absence of progress. It is from, we were told, an altercation with a doorlatch. The entire scar is 10″ long. The section with underlying muscle damage is 5″ long. The deep divot thatContinue reading “Remnant of Rodney’s Past”
Daily Routine – Afternoon & Evening
What’s it like having horses at home? Part II [Part I – Morning] Housecleaning II If I did not clean the stall when I let them out, I go back later. I try for a time when they are at the far end of the field. If they are nearby or in the run-in, theyContinue reading “Daily Routine – Afternoon & Evening”
Melting Milton
We finally replaced our microwave, so I can start heating the horses again. Milton approves. Milton is good for 20-30 minutes. Then he’s done. He’ll stretch, pick his head up, and look about. He’s still happy but he loses the out-to-lunch look. Rodney continues to be part lizard [Piling on the Therapy]. He stands inContinue reading “Melting Milton”
