Is it live or is it Memorex?

If you can’t tell the difference, does it matter?

Yes. I don’t know why.

I did a live online exercise class with friends. (Waves Hi!) As in, the instructor broadcast the class live over YouTube. We each logged in from our respective homes in different states.

It was a one-way broadcast, with a chat sidebar, not a Zoom meeting. At no point did any of us see any of the others. One of us did comment on the chat.

That’s it.

There was no sense experience difference between the live class and queuing up one of the instructor’s recorded videos. The difference was in my head. I knew the class was live.

There was no sense experience difference between doing the class on my own and doing it at the same time that my friends did. The difference was in my head. I knew they were out there doing the same movements I was, particular when I know one of them well enough to envision them doing the exercises.

I could do another video at any time. And yet I don’t. I wait quietly until the same day/time rolls around to do the live class again with my friends.

This is where an insightful person would veer off in to an extended essay reflecting on the social nature of humanity and on the power of imagination to enrich our lives.

The best I can come up with is … the mind is weird.

  1. Loved the class. As you say, it made a difference knowing that the three of us were moving simultaneously.
I could do the moves on my own but I don’t.
