Once More Into The Breach, Fiction Fragment

Scene: An older woman is working outside, cleaning a dog yard. An aggressively nondescript car comes up driveway. Dogs bark in the background. She glances once at the car and then ignores it. A young man in a suit gets out. He walks over to the fence line.

Young Man: I’m looking for ****

Older Woman, without looking up: I’m retired.

Young Man: You don’t even know what I want.

She stops what she’s doing. Faces him.

Older Woman: You are wearing a suit in a rural area. That car couldn’t be any more government issue if you painted a flag on the side. I know what you want.

Young Man: Your government needs you.

Older Woman: Well, I don’t need them.

YM: Our security has been compromised

OW: Government systems are a huge target. Something is always getting cracked.

YM: This time it’s being done by the bad guys.

Older Woman: Oh, please. I’ve worked for the government long enough to know there are no good guys and bad guys. There is our side and their side and retaining the power you have. Good and evil are for individuals. Policy is simply a tool.

Young Man: We will activate your old salary, updated for inflation, with a bonus.

Older Woman: Some money isn’t worth what it costs.

He holds out a photo.

Young Man: Would you do it for her? She is in danger.

She walks over. Takes photo. Scoffs. Hands photo back.

Older Woman: That’s Brandi Hagenbrush. She was returned to her family fifteen years ago. She’s now at U Chicago under a government scholarship studying … (pauses) … Renaissance History, if I recall correctly. If you are going to manipulate people, at least update your media.

Young Man: Other children are in danger.

Older Woman: When something happens, children are always in danger, and civilians, and (waves arm around dog pen) pets, and livestock, and the food chain, and the economy, and our way of life …

She stops. Takes breath.

Older Woman: Besides ‘We are doing it to Protect the Children” has been twisted for terrible uses.

Young Man: I know. I’ve read your blog.

Older Woman: They know it’s me?

Young Man: Give us some credit.

Older Woman: Why aren’t I in jail.

Young Man: Because there is nothing actionable, as you know. It’s very neatly done. Legal uses it to tighten contracts. We do follow the law. When we can.

Older Woman: Okay, you’ve tried patriotism, money, an appeal to my sympathy, and a mild threat of arrest. Unless you have something else, we are done.

She turns back to the yard.

He says nothing for a while.

She continues to scoop poop.

Young Man: The hackers have reverse-engineered the inflow process.

Her head snaps up.

Older Woman: That’s not possible.

Young Man, shrugs: That was one of yours wasn’t it?

Older Woman: You know it was. That’s why you’re here … (looks off into distance) … how did they … if they can … that means …

He keeps a studiously blank face.

She turns to look at him.

Older Woman: I hate you.

He gives a slight smile at this. Looks at the watch on his wrist. He wears a mechanical analog watch, as she does.

Young Man: We leave in 10 minutes.

Older Woman, looks at watch: 20 minutes. I have to take a shower and call someone to feed the dogs.

Did I go have a lesson at Stepping Stone Farm so that I would have something to post? Eh, didn’t hurt. #dubiousmotivation #whateverittakes

An Optimus day. I’m happy that Milton is going well (cross fingers, cross fingers). Really I am. Would it be possible for me to ALSO be charging about doing happy horse things with my horse? [Lesson Horse, School Horse, Emotional Support Horse]

New feets. Women’s Muck Muckster ll Slip-on Shoes from Duluth Trading Company. For morning horse walks so I do not get my toes soaked with dew, nor have to stomp about in rubber boots.

While I was there, winter hat, gloves, wool socks, & leggings (fingers? the pile is sitting on a store display and I am keeping it from slipping off). Props to Duluth for pockets in the leggings. Actual pockets that can hold things, not sad excuses for decoration. Quickly becoming a fan of the Duluth aesthetic. [I Am Vast, pants], [Farm vs Outdoor, coat]

Helmet Watch, National Academy 2023

Awareness of the outside world. Christmas?! Already?!?! Over the weekend, I noticed a massive uptick in red & green commercials and movies. I guess holiday season is now the day after Halloween rather than the day after Thanksgiving. November must be so pissed, A Bitter November. A repeat link from last year, but on point. The National Academy Championship Horse Show this year was helmet positive. In Adult WT, 6 of 7 riders wore helmets. In Adult WTC, 4 of 5 riders had helmets. All the academy kids worn helmets. It was required. Adults were highly encouraged.

“HEADGEAR: Safety helmets are the ONLY acceptable headgear. ASTM/SEI Certified helmets are required for children age 17 and under when mounted. Helmets are highly encouraged for all riders.” NACHS: Attire

Woot!

What a change from when I rode in 2014, less than 10 years ago. That year, of the 7 riders in Adult WTC, I was the only one wearing a helmet. I was trailing the pack. It was suggested that my look might go over better without a large, dark blob enveloping my head. To her credit, Coach Courtney didn’t even bother to suggested this to me. We changed my look a different way. [Show Report]

At this year’s show, the suit riders in the Alpha class still wore the tradition saddle seat derby. I don’t know how this correlates with the above rule. Oh well. I’ll take the progress on offer.

Lunch Is Served. Again.

Awareness of the outside world. NPR: These American birds and dozens more will be renamed, to remove human monikers, Boyce, November 1, 2023.

Back when Mathilda was elderly, I spent many months, maybe over a year, serving lunch. That meant I had to be around here at mid-day. When I was first at Stepping Stone, I had to be done by 1 in order to come home to serve lunch.

Deja vu all over again.

Both Rodney and Milton get lunch.

Rodney gets put up. They both eat. Sometimes Rodney stays in until dinner. Sometimes he comes out. Depends how much napping he feels like doing.

Rodney gets lunch because, except for a brief period, he’s always been hard to keep weight on. He goes in the stall because otherwise Milton eats all his hay.

Milton is on a diet. Even more so than usual. We think part of his crankiness might be low-grade stomach discomfort from over-eating. (Shrug. It’s a theory. We’ve tried everything else.) Since he will not self-regulate, we make sure he only has access to the amount of hay on his meal plan. No eating of Rodney’s leftovers. He also gets hay split into three servings under the theory of little and often.

One side effect of this is a very, very clean floor in the run-in shed. Milton tracks down every stray wisp of hay.

Both seem to be doing well with this regimen. Rodney has some weight. Milton does not. Milton might (???) be in a better mood. Enough progress that we will stay with it for the foreseeable future.

Rodney is elderly enough that one doesn’t feel that one is signing on to do this forever.

Milton is 15. This could go on for a while.
