Blog As Literary Device, A Consideration of Fiction Techniques

Blog as novel. Entire novel as a series of blog posts. Could be framed as the found text of a journal, such as the Red Book of Westmarch. Tolkien Gateway: Red Book of Westmarch

Blog as novel, extreme version. As above released in real time. No going back to adjust plot points. What you wrote is what you work from going forward.

Blog as epistolary novel. Two, or more, blogs that interact with each other.

Blog as journal. Main segment of story is a traditionally-structured narrative. Blog posts are used for characters to speak, as with journal entries.

Blogger as character(s). Character(s) goes through their activities of daily living. Each chapter ends with blog post(s), that might or might not bear any reality to what has happened in the storyline.

Blogger as main character. As above, with the addition that character’s activities of daily living are to write a blog. The two threads of the story are the blog and behind-the-scenes of said blog.

Daily Miles

Check. Missed one day for rain.

Mileage, 1st-28th, [Walking Virtually NYC]
Mileage, 29th-31st, [Mississippi River]

Monthly 5K

Virtual walk in connection with the Georgia Aquarium IRL walk. Race Roster: Georgia Aquarium. 5k. Tried for an otter connection but riverwalks to the north and west were both over an hour’s drive. So I found a new place. Bham Now: The 1.7 mile Inverness Greenway/Valleydale trail is complete—just in time for fall weather, Johnston 2022.

My rate of 4.8 kph Is just under 3 mph, a good speed for me. Not sure where the extra distance came from.

At least, I thought it was a new place. Turns out, this may have been the path I couldn’t find the previous time. [Disc Stroll, Santa Fe International Virtual 5K, Hoover, AL, September 2020]

I utterly did not recognize the space. Still not convinced, but the map is adamant. In my defense, I came at it from the other direction and they changed the sign, but mostly, eye roll. Hoover Sun: Hoover, Shelby County to start Inverness greenway construction in fall, Cromwell 2019.

Mileage, on its own. [Leaping Around The Swamp]

Second Exercise

Local rowing club offers a learn-to row course. Nowhere near ready for it this summer. Maybe next year. I might use the 2025 course as a carrot to get my seat on the erg. I’ve spent enough time admiring rowers, ahem, rowing, I probably should learn how to do it.

Bike. Swim. Tai Chi. Stretching. Not often, but more than zero. So that’s something.

Mileage, bike [Mississippi River]
Mileage, swim & row, not far enough to be worth counting. Yet.

I have not yet had a lesson at New Barn. [Checking Out A Possible New Lesson Barn]

I have emailed them several times with various brilliant ideas. I have stopped by twice. All of this before becoming an official client. I am worried that I am starting to approach stalker levels. This is not idle insecurity on my part. My enthusiasm is vast and not always well received. [Not My Horses, Not My Barn]

Didn’t matter as much with Previous Horse. I had my own horse. I could do my own thing. I was not dependent on the good will of others to ride.

Meanwhile, Stepping Stone Farm continues to be a haven. The plan was to take March off to perhaps learn & grow. [The Next Step]

I didn’t make the entire month of March, but I did make four weeks after the last Winter Tournament in mid-February. I learned that the only thing I was growing was mold. Resumed ride & drive lessons.

If I get started with New Barn, I may put the SSF ride lessons on hold for a bit. Get myself settled with a new instructor before I try to do both.

Adjusting the Walks

Awareness of the outside world. Vest watch. Rodrigo Pessoa wore a safety vest at Longines Ocala. You don’t get riders more stylish or more successful than Pessoa. Photos here, Jumper News: Rodrigo Pessoa: An Icon Returns to Chantilly! R&B Presse for Chantilly Classic. One of the photos shows the vest leashed to the saddle, so I assume an air vest. [Vest Watch, previous post]

We have changed the program for morning walks on days when the horses work.

Husband Greg does all long lining and lunging. He has more patience and it’s good practice for his driving. Previously, I had been standing around holding the non-working horse. Now, we walk. We all do a lap to start. Then, Milton works while Rodney and I walk back & forth. Swap horses. Rodney works while Milton and I walk.

I say work. I use the term loosely. A few circles at trot and canter to get the blood moving and the snorts out. A few mornings a week.

Walk options.

Halters & hand walk. It’s cold. The footing is poor. It’s Monday and they did what passes for real work over the weekend. Time is limited. And so on.

Lunging tack & circles A. Sometimes long line. More recently lunging to encourage forward. I hold non-working horse. This was the paradigm in the past. Still this way if they’ve already done their walk in the morning and this is the afternoon session on the weekend.

Lunging tack & circles B. As above. I keep walking. Moving better than standing for all involved. Both horses get the experience of working or walking by! them! selves! Yards away from their buddy! Possibly even out of sight for a few moments!

They are always entertaining.

Reduce-Reuse-Recycle, Repurposing a Muck Bucket

Awareness of the outside world. Business Insider: This 23-Year-Old USC Student Created One Of The Most Recognizable Logos Of All Time, Bhasin, 2012.

At Stepping Stone Farm. No longer suitable for carrying manure.

Chez nous. Suitable for sorting hay.

In order to keep Milton on his feeding regimen, his hay for the day is weighed & portioned out each morning. I was looking to buy yet another bucket. Spotted this at SSF. Can I have this? You want a broken bucket? Sure, take it.

REDUCE? Ha. REUSE? Yes! RECYCLE? No one takes plastic #2. If they did, I doubt they would take an old muck bucket.

Edible Book 2024, Food Art

My edible book for 2024.

Ate the result. As I did not do last year. [Edible Book]

Elsewhere

There doesn’t appear to be a central source for Edible Book displays or contests. Each school or library has their own rules. The College of Saint Benedict & Saint John’s University libraries in Minnesota require that the Edible Book refer to a well-known book, that the source book be recognizable from the design, and that it be 75% edible, Instagram: @csbsjulibraries 29 March.
