Horses, Life, A Touch of Geek

When Linda came back from Iceland [Riding in Reykjavik], she brought me a fistful of glossy flyers replete with beautiful scenery and gallant horses. (Not ponies. Despite their size, Icelandic horses are never ponies). This is the one that caught my eye. What can I say, I am a sucker for discovering a whole category of information whose existence I had not even suspected. Biosecurity. Who knew?

Flyer produced by the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority.

“In their native country they have few diseases; and as a result Icelandic law prevents horses from being imported into the country and exported animals are not allowed to return.” Visit Iceland: The Icelandic Horse

Nor can you bring in used riding gear, not even gloves. Riding clothes have to be washed &/or disinfected 5 days prior. (How do they know?) Riding equipment

Fascinating.

  1. My dream holiday: riding from geothermal pool to geothermal pool. I have local friends who have imported a herd of these (they brought in four, including one pregnant mare). Lovely, lovely animals and hardy as the day is long. And hairy. Unbelievably hairy.

  2. I am undecided on riding holidays. I have enough horse hysteria in my daily life. After a week running around a large city, I’m happy to come home to the boonies & the horses.
