As the Buddha lay dying, he called all the animals to him. Only 12 showed up, with the horse being the 7th. To show his gratitude, the Buddha awarded a year to each animal, for that animal to look after the ones born in its year. Each animal is also associated with an element, but as the East considers elements different that the West, the cycle doesn’t always match.
