Baby Birds, Barn Life

Baby birds! 10 April

The picture I posted last week, above, was taken on March 20th. [Wordless Wednesday]

Saw nest. Took photo. Set up blog post. Forgot about it.

I don’t have much occasion to go over to the trailer – which was the point of the post – and I figured it was a pile of twigs that would lead nowhere. We get those.

Post came out. Hmm, I probably should check to see if anything happened.

Wow, looks fancier than last time.

Since the nest is wedged up under the overhang of the trailer, it is hard to look down into it.

Wait. Do I see something? Is there maybe an egg in there after all?

Used phone camera with flash as a way to look in.

Chicks!

Took a second picture to confirm and because I was startled. Then I got out of there, so as to not interrupt the family.

Sakura Festival Haiku, Poetry

Awareness of the outside world. Think good thoughts for a friend stepping back into the show ring today. Go E! Ride that pony! You got this!

White and pink and new,
Flowers unfold. Flowers fade;
Memory preserves.

My entry for the 38th Annual Sakura Festival & Haiku Contest, Saturday, March 23th, Tuscaloosa, AL USA. Sent in my entry. Did not attend.

The theme of the 2024’s Sakura Festival is “uketsugu/受け継ぐ” or “preserve.” The spring celebration of Sakura, or cherry blossoms, reminds us of the value of each moment, while the return of spring awakens us to fresh possibilities in life. This year’s theme reminds us to cherish and carry on the connection that was built between the community of Tuscaloosa and our sister-city, Narashino, in Japan.” UA: Sakura Festival.

“The cherry blossom, or sakura, is the flower of trees in Prunus subgenus Cerasus. ‘Sakura’ usually refers to flowers of ornamental cherry trees, such as cultivars of Prunus serrulata, not trees grown for their fruit (although these also have blossoms). Wiki: Cherry blossom.

Lesson Plan, Or Not

Awareness of the outside world. “There are 193, 195, 237, 245, 248, or 253 countries in the world, depending on definition.” National Online.org: How many countries are there in the world?

The plan is to have riding lessons at the New Barn and stay with Stepping Stone Farm for driving. [Other Barns]

Unfortunately, that leaves me at the whim of the weather. New Barn does not have a covered ring. SSF has a covered space that is good for riding but not big enough for a cart.

Which means, no lesson this week.

Weekend Update, Walks Resumed

Awareness of the outside world. “We have passed the milestone of 15 million jobs created … Unemployment has been under 4% for the longest stretch in more than 50 years.” White House.gov: Statement from President Joe Biden on the March Jobs Report, April 05, 2024.

You get the week off! And you get the week off! Everybody gets the week off!

On Tuesday morning, Milton took several horrible, funky, hoppy steps. We were worried. He walked out of it quickly and later thundered into breakfast. We were not too worried.

Start treating for abscess. [Milton’s Silver Slipper]

Wednesday & Thursday mornings, Milton grazed while Rodney & I walked.

On Friday morning, Milton said, ‘I walk’ and stomped off after Rodney instead of grazing. Seriously. To the point of leading the parade without benefit of human. ‘This is what we do. We walk.’

Okay then.

Resumed regular walks. No afternoon sessions. Give Milton’s foot time to heal, reabsorb the abscess, get over whatever is the issue. More time is seldom the wrong answer. Rodney got time off because … shrug.

Bottom line. Walks. No work with tack.
