On The Mountain, Fiction Fragment

I asked, once more, “When are we getting to ****.”

My guide, once more, ignored me, trudging on in front without answering. All was silence. Oh, I suppose there were tree noises and wild animal noises and all manner of noises that would have given my guide all manner of interesting information. Not me. When you are used to the clatter and bang of a city, sparrow farts don’t register.

I stopped.

“When.”

Pause.

“Are we.”

Pause.

“Getting there.”

I wasn’t being a difficult client. Okay, I wasn’t just being a difficult client. I was worried about my money and our food lasting.

A response! Eureka!

My guide stopped, turned, and said, “I. Don’t. Know.”

Wait, what?

I emitted puzzlement.

My guide signed and looked away. Down at the ground. Up at the trees. Back at me, briefly.

“Look, I have not idea where **** is.”

Shock. I think my jaw actually sagged.

It was my turn to look around. Was this some sort of weird ambush? Why drag me all the way out here when I could have been mugged in a convenient alley before we started.

“I needed to get over the mountain. You needed to get over the mountain and you were paying for the trip. No one even knows if **** even exists.”

” … but … how … ” My eloquence had gone begging.

“Can we walk and talk? I want to get off this ridge and find a good campsite before dark.”

I continued to stand. I felt as if we were having two conversations. One about logistics, the other about fundamental principles. “Why should I follow you?”

My guide looked at me as if I was the one being unreasonable, “Do you really want to stop here? Do you have any idea how to get back on your own?”

Good points, unfortunately.

“Okay I was loose with the truth …”

Understatement.

” … but I’ve delivered as a guide, haven’t I? You’re warm. You’re safe. You’re well fed. I gotten good bargains at the markets. I’ve found cheap places to sleep. We’ve made good time.”

Also good points. It was as if a robber was explaining how careful they had been in picking your pocket. I couldn’t formulate a response that fit either half of our conversation.

“First rule of the road, trust no one.”

“But I hired your through the guide group.”

“Yeah, well, I lied to them as well.”

“I’m going to call you weasel from now on.”

“I like weasels. They’re clever. They get what they want.”

“Have you no shame?”

“No. I can’t afford it.”

I considered my position. I was indeed warm, safe, and had spent less than budgeted so far. I looked around at the trees and stones, the definition of the middle of nowhere. I followed. What choice did I have?

Afterword

Modern world or generic medieval fantasy setting?

Correct answer should be either. I tried to leave it deliberately vague so that the story could go wherever it wanted. Period specifics could be added, for example, the authorizing group could be a professional association (modern) or a guild (fantasy).

As usual, no idea what happens next. At least it’s a brief bit of story. I am therefore declaring this to be ankle-biter vertical, an improvement over last week’s crossrail. [A Book]

You might have noticed the name of the farm where the show was held, Full Circle Horse Park. Home Team came here often. Nothing recent, but in the past we have done dressage, jumping, schooling, a clinic, and driving.

How would I cope with show that took place next to a cross-country course?

Beforehand, I did make the occasional joke on the subject.

Come the day, meh. Not a big deal.

Despite the variety of the list above, mostly we came here for Intro dressage. Can’t say I miss that.

I was already deeply annoyed with Rodney & Milton for not gallivanting around the XC course. [This Is Why I Don’t Set Goals]

Being there with horses who weren’t supposed to be jumping made the whole subject easier to ignore.

Friday Night Parade

Friday night was opening ceremonies, complete with a parade of athletes, at a big downtown arena.

I started off with my oops for the day. Chatting with people behind me in the check-in line for the West Region.

Them: We followed you. We figured you’d know where to go.
Me: Oh, do you live in Shelby County?
Them: We ride at the same barn you do.
Me: —

Proceed to rousing lecture. My responses were not typical of the rest of the room.

Speaker: What are you gonna do to help your team?
Me: Feed it peppermints.

Speaker: Leave with love!
Me: And a chain shank. [In Chains]

We lined up in a big room. As far as I could see, I was the only one in a blue shirt – i.e. the only athlete – with gray hair.

We moved en masse to another staging area. For undisclosed reasons, equestrians did not line up with their regions. We lined up as a group before the rest of the folks. Stepping Stone Farm was in the lead among the five barns. Therefore, we were at the head of the line. Narrow, concrete tunnel under the stands. Mascots in front revving people up while we waited.

Cue high-pitched screaming in an enclosed space. My inner curmudgeon won. I left.

Saturday Horse Show

Saturday was the show. This was the one Coach Courtney recommended. If I only do one show, I should do that this one. [Hey Kids]

For State Games, there were signage, medals, and a podium available for photos. A true equestrian podium would have room behind to line up the horses. This was more of a photo op than part of a ceremony. The show was also held at a facility that was not one of the Alabama Saddlebred barns. Neutral territory, I assume.

For the the rest, it was a show. Same people, same horses, same classes. A standard ASHAA Summer Show, enhanced with State Games pageantry.

10 Academy Driving – 1st of 2, gold medal

Emeralds Brown Sugar (Bubba)
40 Academy Showmanship WTC, Adult Amateur – 2nd of 2, silver medal
41 Academy Equitation WTC, Adult Amateur – 2nd of 2, silver medal

Thank you to Courtney Huguley & Stepping Stone Farm for horses who know their jobs so well.

Thank you to Diana for the photos. A Descent Into Madness

Driving

Two in class! Two student drivers!

I drove well. Andre was awesome. I had help.

It was actually a two-horse, four-person class, all from SSF. Coach Courtney stood in the middle of the ring, advising me throughout the class. Coach James helped the other driver with Optimus. The upside of a class for student drivers.

Riding

Dailed up the showmanship. I rocked. First into the ring. Moved out. Made snappy turns. Stayed off the rail. Bubba wanted to know who dropped a ferret down my pants. He was okay with it, but he did notice. [Would You Rather]

Made mistakes. Overrode canter. Placed second.

Fixed mistakes. Smoothed out canter. Still placed second.

Victories

Two non-Optimus horses, one new to me.

Drove well. Rode hard.

Got all four leads & didn’t break canter.

Banquet! “We all knew I was gonna cave.” [Show]

Pagentry

State Games? More on this tomorrow. Short version. Standard summer show with added decor.

Milton
9 miles this week, 79 miles total
9 outings – 7 handwalks, 1 ride, 1 drive

All outings one mile in pasture.

Tuesday 28 May to Monday 10 June

Logistics

Mornings. Handwalk each day.

Afternoons. Wednesday, Saturday, & Monday, second handwalk Rodney. Thursday, ride both. Sunday. Hitch Milton. Ride Rodney. Planning to ride. Went to catch horse. Horse walked away. Went over to hose area. It was hot. He was not wrong. Got bath. Handwalk later.

Commentary

Don’t leave miles on the table.

I was thinking about going for a short (so short) bike ride on Sunday afternoon, because exercise. We decided I was better off chalking up another mile. Bike after VT. Doing okay so far, but a pulled shoe, a kick, anything, could throw us off our game.

With life, you never know. With horses, you never know, squared.

Fly Mask Update

Awareness of the outside world. Considering the news. A wise person once told me, Always vote the environment. It’s the only thing that will be here in 100 years. While one could raise a quibble about the long-term impact of this or that event, as a first pass, it’s a good metric.

~~~
Rodney has said no to the fly mask. Thank you very much.
Milton on the other hoof, loves his.
Both seems to like their fly boots.
Milton would probably enjoy a fly sheet, but he would get too hot. Rodney wouldn’t mind the heat, but he’s not the bug bait that Milton is.
The answers are ever evolving.
