Wrist Wreport, Short Version

Awareness of the outside inside world. The Bone Museum.

Follow up to initial post. [Cursewords!]

What Happened

I blame the cold snap. Had put blankets on the fenceline to act as windbreaks for the run-in area. Got my feet tangled. Down I went.

Mildly displaced compression fracture to end of radius on right arm. Very common injury. Squashed it like stomping on the upright end of a soda can.

Prognosis

Currently, splint from elbow to palm, non-weightbearing, first few weeks, approx. Next step, cast, can lift 5 pounds, weeks 4-6. Third step, brace. Total time 8 to 12 weeks, depending on healing.

Driving? When I can react safely.

Me: Riding?
Nurse Practitioner: (dubious look) 12 weeks. At least.
Me: Cursewords!

Practical

Right away, I realized that a lot of activities were not in my immediate future: driving a car, riding, showing (seriously, I had a sweet deal set up for the December show, sigh), driving a cart, juggling, needlepoint, origami, biking, swimming.

Then there were the things I found I could not do one-handed that took me by surprise.

Put my hair up.

Empty a bucket. Lift, yes. Tip out, no.

Clip my nails.

Wave hello with my right hand.

Scrub the back of my free hand.

Water the horses.

Old-school pinball.

Coda

You will undoubtedly hear vastly more on the subject once I have a full compliment of typing fingers. Right hand & fingers getting less sore – yay – but splint includes elbow, so hand locked in thumb upright position. No piano hands for me!

Onwards!
Katherine

  1. It’s going to seem like months rather than weeks to someone as active as you. But don’t push! I know I’m bothering you, I’m sorry, but as soon as the frustration gets worse you might try too hard and set back your healing. I don’t have that many friends in this world, I care about the good ones.

  2. m so sorry about this for you!!!!! Glad your fellow driver lives there! Please take care of yourself and rest and enjoy analog reading! Sending get well wishes!!!

  3. Ohhhh, I remember these limitations and frustrations from previous injuries. You have my sympathies, and real sorry that riding, and driving, are out of the question – for now. MM
