Awareness of the outside world. ❤️. [Over The Years]
~~~
Years ago, I was standing at the side of the ring watching a rider at an event do their show jumping round. Next to me was spouse of rider.
Spouse: They are really having a good trip.
Me: Don’t say that. You’ll jinx it.
Spouse: Oh, I don’t believe in …
CLONK!
Pole down.
🐎🐎🐎
Put this on the list of things you can’t use in fiction because no one would believe it.
Do I truly believe in jinxes? No. On the other hand, I never say a ride is going well until everyone has their feet safely on the ground. Make of that what you will.
Onwards!
In what turned out to be Priney’s last event, at Seneca, the show secretary was going to give me an even number. I asked for an odd number, as odd numbers are lucky for me. We were still 6th in dressage, but we got 2nd overall. The best we’d ever done, and a good way to close out her competition career. Was it that odd number?
Or was it you knowing you had an odd number?
Could very well be. But maybe mind tricks like that affect all superstitions.
Is it ironic that these little superstitions give us an illusion of control?
“illusion of control” I shall have to remember that when I am superstitiously freaking out.
