I asked the nice man at the Mediterranean market for Egyptian food. He said fava beans and led me to this. Label says Egyptian. Small print says Product of United Arab Emirates.
Tasty. Interesting flavor & better texture than the mushy mess that I usually associate with beans.

Technical Notes
Phone Camera, Portrait Mode
Part of the point of the photo project is to drag out my big camera. Lately, I’ve been having good luck with portrait mode on the phone camera. Which is surprising. In the past, I loathed it & wished I could rip it out. It would switch without my knowledge and result in fuzzy pix. Starting to appreciate what the mode can do. Still wish my phone wouldn’t randomly decide I needed to use it.
Food photography is a whole thing all by itself. The Internet lists professional food photographers, tips for amateurs, and a host of tricks to make food look better in photos than it does in reality.
Why? Current online class, UC Graham: From Istanbul to Cairo: The City in the Historical Novels of the Middle East.

Have you read the Alexandria Quartet?

Perhaps I should try again. I’ve always assumed Durrell was too literary for me. Lawrence that is. Gerald Durrell I can read. He wrote about animals.
Yes, food photography is another realm, and I never quite got the work permit to enter full-time, which might say something about my priorities.
I haven’t been to a Mediterranean grocery store here (BHM), but will look for it.
It’s dumb-easy to change the settings on iPhones by mistake, for Portrait, Landscape, Pano, etc. You are not alone on this annoyance.
I scrolled a little through the Food Awards link, and in the James Beard Category — must be in the US, must have a person(s), in the photo — I liked the b&w of the field workers going to work. Make us think about where our food comes from.

PS: I tried to add photo here, as screen shot, and a drag-drop, but not able to. (Photo has credit line in lower left.) It’s gorgeous. I hope it wins something.
The number of subspecialties within photography is amazing.
