The alternates are more traditionally fractal, but to me they look weirdly violent.

Virtual Brush Box 
Maybe because in the alternates the X is superimposed on the rest, as if to cancel them but in the first one, the X is on the same level as if friends or at least equals.
The first one is less disturbing.
