Night Lights, Photography

Awareness of the outside world. “On May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court handed down its decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which declared segregated public educational facilities unconstitutional.” Library of Congress: Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, Friedman, April 25, 2024. Resources & mural.

Aurora borealis, 11 & 12 May 2024, approx. latitude 33N, southern US.

First Night

Got up. Looked about, Used cell phone, per advice, ” ‘Cellphones are much better than our eyes at capturing light,’ Space Weather Prediction Center’s Brent Gordon. ” AL.com: Northern Lights in Alabama, Gore, May. 11, 2024.

My eye: clouds

Phone camera viewfinder: bright clouds

Preview image: red clouds

Image: reddish-white clouds

Celestial event or camera error? No idea. Either way, it is interesting how the different sensors perceived the same phenomenon.

Maybe I did see something. “Then in the early morning the auroral forms can take on a more cloud-like appearance.” NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center: Aurora.

Second Night

Apparently my camera has a night mode. “I took mine with the Pixel phone’s ‘Night Vision’ setting.” Whatever 11 May. I don’t have a Pixel, but I looked. Lo & behold, my phone has a night setting. This may be the first time I’ve used anything other than the main button. (Purist? Moi? Sniffs dismissively. But I digress.)

My eye: dark

Phone camera viewfinder: dark

Preview Image: dark

Preview Image with night mode: colors

Image: muted colors with visible camera wobble

So What Did The Horses Think?

Milton very confused. If not here to feed cookie to gray horse, why U in field?

The next time I went out, I made a point of being prepared. Milton accepted his tax & wandered off.

Onwards!
Katherine
